Nick Burkett was born and raised in Tyler, TX, and graduated from Legacy High School (formerly Robert E. Lee High School). Nick earned his BBA in Accounting from Texas A&M University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Nick also earned his MS in Finance from Texas A&M. Nick possesses a wide range of experience that the firm leverages across various practice areas.
Nick is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed in Texas. He added the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) credential shortly thereafter. Later, he added the Accreditation in Business Valuation and the Certification in Financial Forensics, both of which are administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). This means that national and international licensing institutions have vetted Nick’s qualifications in several fields of specialty.
Experience
Nick’s expertise has been developed through an extensive professional background that spans more than 22 years in public accounting.
After graduating from Texas A&M, Nick was recruited by Deloitte, LLP, one of the world’s “Big 4” accounting firms. Nick joined Deloitte’s Houston, TX, office, working in audit & advisory services.
He began his career in forensic accounting after joining Matson, Driscoll & Damico, LLP. MDD is a global forensic accounting firm specializing in insurance and litigation matters. Nick worked with substantial insurance and casualty losses and litigation support services. He continues to be routinely designated as a financial expert in litigation cases involving various types of damages, valuations, asset tracings, and other economic damage analyses.
Nick later joined Navigant Consulting, a top 25 global consulting firm, in their Dallas office. While there, he further honed his craft in economic damages and litigation support. Those services included business valuations, lost profits calculations, complex federal tax damages, and intellectual property damages.
Part of Navigant’s team left to form the forensic and dispute resolutions service line for Alvarez & Marsal, LLP’s Dallas office. During that time, Nick deepened his knowledge and expertise in intellectual property damages and general economic damage litigation.
In 2009, Nick moved back home to Tyler, TX, to join Bailes & Co., PC, a leading firm in the area of business valuations, forensic accounting, and litigation support in Northeast Texas. While at Bailes & Co, Nick found his calling to be a well-rounded and trusted advisor to successful entrepreneurs and small business owners from all walks of life.
Nick’s distinguished and well-rounded professional background and his passion for small business formed the foundations for Burkett & Courington, a Forensic, Litigation, and Valuation Services (FLVS) firm in Tyler, TX, and The Burkett Firm, P.C., an accounting firm in Tyler, TX.
Personal Life
Since moving back to Tyler, Nick has embraced being a part of his home community. Nick and his wife, Sarah, are active members of Grace Community Church. Nick has faithfully served in a number of lay leadership roles within the community, including at Marvin Methodist Church and St. Paul Children’s Foundation. In his spare time, Nick enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, reading, golfing, and following Aggie sports.
